July 22, 1981, Bob Ketterling of Faulkton purchased a carousel at an auction in Edgemont, S.D.  The Carousel is No. 8, manufactured in 1925 by the C.W. Parker Co. of Leavenworth, Kansas. It has 19 of the 20 original aluminum horses and the 2 chariot seats, one red and one blue.

In August of 1981, he began giving free rides to all and planned "The Happy Times Park" around the carousel. He died in 1988 and Faulkton was named the "Carousel City" in his memory. In 1990 the City purchased the Carousel from his widow.

Hope’s Park and Playground

Hope’s Park and Playground is located just south of the Faulkton Area Medical Center on 14th Avenue South. The park came to fruition after two years of fundraising and was built with a lot of volunteers helping, both children and adults. The idea of the park began in 2017 when Beth Deiter of Faulkton wanted to do something for the community to commemorate her 25th anniversary of being cancer free.  The hospital donated some property south of their facility and with the help of a $25,000.00 donation of seed money from Deiter, the project, Hope’s Park and Playground, began.  Her vision for the park was to have a place for people to take a break when visiting or staying with a loved one in the hospital and would be a place for all family members, young and old, with benches, shelters and playground equipment.  Today the playground equipment includes activities for 9-month-old children to 12-year old’s as well as outdoor musical instruments and is also handicap accessible. The playground has been proven to be a favorite place for the neighborhood children to visit and a wonderful asset for the community.

picklerPickler Mansion

900 8th Ave. South
Faulkton, SD 57438

The John and Alice Pickler home on the south edge of Faulkton is a prairie Victorian home featuring 20 rooms in three stories. Construction began in 1882 when Major Pickler, a Civil War veteran, built his claim shanty on his pre-emption near the Nixon River of Faulk County, Dakota Territory.  There was no architect for the construction of this prairie mansion, which was built in stages and completed by 1894.

Many events took place in this commonly called "Pink Castle". From weddings, proms, funerals to being a polling place for the township for many years. The home was used to host many visiting dignitaries including Susan B. Anthony, who stayed with them in 1890, and Teddy Roosevelt.

  • Come take a tour of this wonderful piece of history.
  • Open for tours daily 1-4 p.m. Memorial day to Labor Day or call 605-598-4285.
  • Admission is $15.00 per person which goes to help fund the restoration of this pioneer home.

Lyric Theatre

809 Court Street
Faulkton, SD 57438

Built in 1950 by brothers Leo and Cyril Huss, the Lyric Theatre is one of the oldest continuously running
movie theaters in South Dakota. The first movie that was played in this theater was Miss Grant Takes
Richmond, starring Lucille Ball and William Holden, in the summer of 1950. The Lyric provides a unique
experience to visitors who get to step back in time as they walk through the original wooden doors of
this historic building, while enjoying the sights and sounds of a modern-day digital theater. The lobby
and concession areas are decorated with decades of theater memorabilia collected by the Huss Family,
and the popcorn is still made just as it was 70+ years ago in a vintage popcorn machine. The brothers
ran the theater jointly until a fire in 1967, when Cyril and Dorothy Huss (his wife) bought Leo’s share and
renovated the space. The theater continues to be run by their son David Huss who can be found every
weekend in the box office greeting patrons and selling tickets.
